The Gospel

The word gospel simply means “good news.” But before the good news can land, we must understand the bad news.

God is perfectly holy. We are not. Every one of us has sinned and falls short of His glory (Romans 3:23) and that sin creates a debt we cannot pay. No amount of effort, religion, or self-improvement can close the gap between a holy God and a broken humanity.

That is where Jesus enters.

The Gospel is the message of who Jesus is and what He did. Specifically: Jesus, the eternal Son of God, lived the perfect life we could never live — perfectly fulfilling God’s law. He then died on the cross, absorbing the full penalty our sin deserved. Three days later, He rose from the dead, defeating death itself. By sending His Son to fulfill the just demands of the law through His sinless life, and by removing the curse of the law in His death, God provides what He requires. Here is the staggering part: you can be declared just by God while you are still a sinner. God doesn’t wait for you to clean yourself up. He offers His own Son’s righteousness as a gift — credited to your account the moment you trust in Christ alone. Ligonier

This is not a self-improvement program. It’s not religion. It stands in contrast to every legalistic attempt to gain God’s favor by human effort. It is a rescue — initiated entirely by God, accomplished entirely by Christ, received entirely by faith. Ligonier Ministries

If you’ve never placed your trust in Jesus, the invitation is open to you right now. Confess that you cannot save yourself. Believe that Christ died in your place and rose again. Trust Him — and Him alone — as your Lord and Savior.

That is the Gospel.
